Every year Kettle Moraine 100 has a standing reservation for the second week of June for this classic endurance event. This is thanks to a great partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Recourses (DNR). When I took over as RD a couple years back the local DNR did a great job helping me understand and work through preparing for race day with reservations and permitting. All communication I have ever received from DNR shows the great deal of respect they have for endurance athletes. They are proud of the events on the trails & work well with us to make it happen year after year. We have a huge amount of gratitude for them allowing this.
Our team has carefully worked on a race day plan to keep our community safe, and allow for the race to happen. I will share this with the community for your piece of mind. I feel cautious doing this because I don’t want to see anyone be upset with DNR or the State of Wisconsin if they decide to put stricter restrictions on us or make decisions we don’t like. We ask that every one respects them. They have shown us respect.
We promise the runners that we will do our best to make this race happen and are prepared to be fluid with new ideas and race day adjustments. We want to keep the race as normal as possible. It is our 25 year anniversary race and deserves to be special.
How do we plan to keep our runners safe for 2021?
Our first task in preparing for 2021 race was to keep the number of participants as low as possible. We did this by trying to spread out last years runners over a couple years.
We offered, 1- roll over to 2021, 2- rollover to 2022, 3- 50 % refund. Even though we set a deadline last year, we gave everyone another chance to rollover to 2022 this year. We felt that was fair to the ability of athletes to make an informed choice since their choice is made closer to the race date and knowing the state of the world at this time. It also allowed us another chance to get the number of participants down. Early in the year, we were hopeful this could open new spots as well.
Here is a list of everyone that re-registered for 2021 race
Race day planning

***One pacer is allowed for each 100 mile runner. You can pick up pacer at Nordic. Must pre-register to be a pacer. We will send details.
Spectators
One crew member per aid station. We will have designated parking. If the parking is full, then the aid station is at capacity. Runners & crew will need to be prepared to be fluid.
We want friends and family to be able to see their runners
LIVE Coverage
We have hired Fuzion Videos to do live coverage of the race. You will be able to watch it LIVE from our YouTube Channel Ornery Mule Racing. Please take time now to subscribe for free to our channel. You can watch our channel from your phone or home on TV. We have been working with Fuzion over the last two years on various projects and have full confidence that with a combined effort of the OMR Team and Fuzion we will be able to provide coverage. We gave Fuzion Videos the example of Black Canyon 100k’s live coverage to prepare.
I would like to acknowledge and give huge kudo’s to Aravaipa for their creativity in live coverage at Black Canyon 100k as well as Desert Solstice 24 hour. They are an organization I have admired for years and this is just another example of why. OMR will put forth our best effort to give friends, family and crew quality live coverage. We know one of our challenges will be internet speed, but we will do the best we can. If anyone feels they can offer help in making this highly successful for us, please reach out.
Special needs of the race
Volunteer positions will be important. Runners will depend on aid stations more than ever. Temp checkers is a new position we need. Signup to volunteer here
Race photography
We would be grateful for a few photography volunteers. We are using our photography budget to do live coverage of the race. If you are interested in volunteering please message us. We would be happy to swap for future race entries or other ideas. We have a beautiful race course and some amazing talent registered this year that includes Karl Meltzer and Kaci Lickteig. Great chances of some forever classic photos.
Thank you,
Michele Hartwig ~ Race Director
